Want to use iTunes but when you start iTunes the status bar hangs at “accessing iTunes store”? Here are some possible solutions.
First of all you should try to update iTunes. This frequently helps me to fix this issue in Windows 7. For some reason the old iTunes version regularly hang when I access the iTunes store.
Another thing you can try is also obvious, try to restart your computer and reinstall iTunes.
Also make sure that the iTunes store is currently not having problems by checking the official iTunes forums.

On the above topic, I’ve spent literally hours trying to sort this one out. I’ve been through all the fixes, moved things and deleted things I didn’t even know existed. I’ve uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled several times to no avail. However, I had a breakthrough which might help others. I uninstalled iTunes AND Quicktime and then re-installed iTunes from the main iTunes site and Hey Presto IT WORKED. So, when it says uninstall iTunes, uninstall Quicktime too. Hope this works for somebody else too.
